When you have a care provider who really gets what you’re going through, it makes all the difference. Especially when it comes to your weight. GOM’s founder, Sunil Daniel, understands where you are. For the past 15 years, he’s been on a personal weight journey—and he’s had his share of successes and setbacks. Sunil’s weight journey started when years of study, residency, and hectic schedules disrupted his healthy lifestyle, leading to weight gain. A checkup helped him correlate his weight gain with health issues, and he joined a medical weight loss program that combined meal replacements with comprehensive support. Sunil lost weight, and the successful experience encouraged him to explore obesity medicine as a field. Obesity is a complex disease that’s both progressive and relapsing. Sometimes even after success, biology can take over. Sunil began regaining weight, and years later, he was back to where he started, despite having expert knowledge about how to manage weight. Like many patients who regain, he felt disappointed, discouraged, and ashamed. But, understanding the science of how obesity develops and how to treat it kept him going. Other health issues came up, and Sunil eventually decided to have weight loss surgery. Even five years after surgery, lifestyle challenges and biological changes can lead to weight regain. Combining surgery with obesity medication helps him keep his weight stable. Sunil’s experience helps him connect and problem-solve with patients every day. It’s why compassion is the foundation of care at GOM Health. Sunil’s experience has made him a powerful advocate for patients through the Obesity Action Coalition. He’s worked with other physicians to define the field of obesity medicine through the American Board of Obesity Medicine. He has helped develop clinical tools and treatment frameworks used by clinicians in obesity care, including contributions to the Obesity Algorithm® through the Obesity Medicine Association. When you begin working with GOM, your care team will tell you that your weight is not your fault. It’s not a personal failing, and it’s not a character flaw. We know this is scientifically and medically true. Obesity is a chronic disease that can be treated. We also know that compassion that comes from personal experience can make a difference in your success.
